In Kansas, the Ogallala underlies 38 percent of the state, according to the US Geological Survey. Like many other states in the High Plains, agriculture forms the backbone of the economy, with Kansas producing much of the nation’s beef cattle, corn, wheat, grain sorghum and soybeans.
